When Mississippi seceded from the Union, a large blue flag with a single white star was raised over the capitol building in Jackson.

“One witness to this event , an Irish-born actor named Harry Macarthy, was so inspired by the spectacle that he wrote a song entitled “The Bonnie Blue Flag” which was destined to be the second most popular patriotic song of the Confederacy…Although the Confederate government did not adopt it, the Confederate people did, and lone star flags were adopted in one form or another in five of the southern States which adopted new flags in 1861.” (Quoted from The Flags of the Confederacy by D. Cannon, Jr.)
