The Sovereignty Flag was the unofficial South Carolina State Flag, December 1860 - January 26, 1861. The 15 stars in the South Carolina flag represented the 15 slave states. The cross, except for its coloring, resembled the St. George Cross of England. The crescent was adopted from the Moultrie Flag and the palmetto tree was added to the design. The palmetto represented the colonials defense of the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan’s Island against the British in 1776.
