An unofficial flag of South Carolina, this distinctive and historical flag or banner was around in December of 1860-61. It was carried in the streets of Charleston during the Secession movement of December 1860 and was also flown over the US Customs House on the day South Carolina seceded from the Union. Known as the South Carolina Secession Flag, this banner was used in the celebrations throughout the streets of Charleston in December 1860. It contained the crescent, and emblem of heraldry, which represented the second son of a family.

Interestingly, the crescent is upside down on this flag. Some argue this reverse position was to symbolize that the state, represented by the star, had returned to the universe of nations, and thus was no longer subservient to anyone but God. The red background, a traditional military color, symbolizes the courage and fighting independence of the southern people. A larger version of this flag was thought to have been flown by the boat “Dixie” during the War Between the States. Today, this banner remains an emblem of pride to many and expresses the enthusiasm, dedication and independence of our South Carolina ancestors. It says clearly that like our forefathers our rights we defend.
