The Stars and Bars (1st National Flag) adopted March 4, 1861. The first Stars and Bars had seven stars, one for each of the seceding states (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas). Once the war started and the other states seceded (Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee), the number of stars increased to eleven. Two stars were added for Kentucky and Missouri, but these two states never seceded from the Union.
